There are 3 times more super-powered antioxidating polyphenols in fresh pomegranates and pomegranate juice than red wine or green tea and 1 pomegranate has 40% of the Vitamin C daily requirement.
Pomegranates may also protect us from ill-effects of Alzheimer’s as a recent study demonstrated drinking 8 oz. of juice daily increased memory and learning capacity.
Those super-powered, super-hero polyphenols may also be at work with these demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects:
↓ stress damage to connective tissue in rheumatoid and osteoarthritis
Suggested may prevent prostate cancer
Reduce heart disease - A recent small study showed pomegranate juice increased blood flow with decreased plaque formation and arterial stiffening. But pomegranate may also counter some blood pressure and cholesterol lowering statin drugs. If you are taking either of these types of drugs talk to your doctor first.
Decrease Blood Pressure - Pomegranates may be helpful in lowering systolic blood pressure, but more studies are needed to demonstrate daily pomegranate juice with keeping blood pressure in check long- term.
Slow Osteoporosis - Recent research results are also hopeful that pomegranates can play a role in slowing osteoporosis.
Improving digestion - The strong anti-inflammatory qualities of fresh pomegranates may also aid in treating Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Antiviral & Antibacterial – There are loads of Vitamin C and Vitamin E in a pomegranate.
Increase Exercise Recovery – Move over tart cherry and beet juice, pomegranate juice will increase endurance, decrease soreness and increase strength recovery - those amazing antioxidative polyphenols at it again! It might be nice to try pomegranates in your next smoothie!
Treatment of Diabetes – Pomegranates have long been a traditional remedy for diabetes in the Middle East and India. It’s not known why, but pomegranates may reduce insulin resistance in our cellular metabolism and thereby reduce the blood sugar level.
Fertility – For many ancient cultures pomegranates symbolize fertility, abundance and posterity. Pomegranates have been demonstrated to reduce oxidative stress to the placenta and pomegranate juice will also increase testosterone levels in both men and women.
2018 has been a very good year for my pomegranate harvest so my patients, friends and neighbors have all gotten fruit. One of my patients also shared that in his native Turkey, pomegranates are a symbol of good luck – so make a wish, eat your pomegranate and your wish will come true! If that wish is good health, pomegranates will deliver.
If you don’t own your own tree, consider planting one. Pomegranates are very disease resistant and very, very drought and heat tolerant! If that’s really not an option look for fresh, non-pasteurized juice. And, no sugar added; that defeats the purpose of all those anti-oxidative properties of the pomegranate! Also, try purchasing the whole fruit to juice or add the seeds to salads.
Enjoy eating healthy!
